RAUF DIWAN

Rauf Diwan is a managing director of Emerging Markets Partnership. The international private equity firm is a world leader in private infrastructure investment. Diwan was responsible for establishing and managing EMP’s regional office in Singapore, and instrumental in developing and executing EMP’s strategy in Korea. Headquartered in Washington, the firm manages equity funds of more than $5.5 billion, and has offices in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Bahrain, Hong Kong, Johannesburg (South Africa), and London.

In addition to serving on the board of several Asian companies, Diwan is chief executive officer of the $1.08 billion AIG Asian Infrastructure Fund.

EMP’s first fund, Asia I was established in 1994 to invest in infrastructure and related industries in Asia. AIG is the main sponsor and a significant investor in Asia I, along with investment entities of the Government of Singapore. Representatives of the Sultanate of Brunei and GE Capital serve on the Investment Committee, Henry Kissinger chairs the Advisory Board, and Diwan serves on the Oversight Committee.

Prior to joining EMP, Diwan spent 15 years at the International Finance Corporation (a World Bank private equity arm), serving as manager and later director of IFC’s power department. Responsible for investments in the power sector of all emerging markets, he achieved the highest level of investment in the sector during his tenure. As division manager of IFC’s East Asia Division, he was responsible for turning around and expanding IFC’s business in China. He was also responsible for several innovative structures and played a leading role in advisory work on the first BOT (build/operate/transfer) project in China.

A graduate of the Stanford University Executive Program, Diwan earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Oregon State University in Eugene. He was a DuPont fellow at New York’s Columbia University where he earned his MBA. A member of the Indonesia Commission: Peace and Progress in Papua, Diwan has spoken at such forums as the Wharton Private Equity Conference.
